This station invites students to deepen their understanding of what we mean by rational and irrational numbers.

A strong theme of conjecturing and convincing runs through the resources at Thinking about Numbers, so familiar ideas such as fractions and square roots will be revisited with a focus on students posing questions, or trying to justify why certain statements and ideas are true. While this station focuses on number, there is underlying algebraic structure in resources such as Scary sum and Staircase sequences revisited that students can be asked to think about.

There are also several bigger picture pieces at this station, providing some historical background to how irrational numbers were discovered, and how rational numbers in various forms helped mathematicians understand more about infinity.
